I guess I began making and playing the banjo at about the same time. In 1974 I
apprenticed to Dave Sturgil of Piney Creek, NC. His shop was right in the heart of
Mountain Music country. Almost every weekend we were off to a fiddlers convention in
Virginia , West Virginia or North Carolina, or I was traveling through the mountains
visiting musicians like Jont Blevins, who played the best "Ramblin' Hobo" I've
ever heard. I was also influenced by other great local luthiers such as Wayne
Anderson, Albert Hash and Kyle Creed. It was Kyle that effected me the most, his
banjos and style of playing just set me on fire.
I've been making and playing banjos for a long time. After years of compliments
on their sound and having people buy them right out of my hands while I'm playing
them, I've decided to to take orders for custom banjos. I don't make a
lot of them and it takes me a while to finish one because I make them to perfection.
If you don't mind a little wait for a superior instrument let me know and I'll get
one started for you as soon as I can.
I've always loved the tune "Cacklin' Hen," so it just seemed natural that it
should be the name for my banjos. The "Cacklin Hen" peghead shape and
pearl inlay are original J.C. Armiger designs.
